    Dynamic Friction Parameter Identification Method with LuGre Model for Direct-Drive Rotary Torque Motor

    Attainment of high-performance motion/velocity control objectives for the Direct-Drive Rotary (DDR) torque motor should fully consider practical nonlinearities in controller design, such as dynamic friction. The LuGre model has been widely utilized to describe nonlinear friction behavior; however, parameter identification for the LuGre model remains a challenge. A new dynamic friction parameter identification method for LuGre model is proposed in this study. Static parameters are identified through a series of constant velocity experiments, while dynamic parameters are obtained through a presliding process. Novel evolutionary algorithm (NEA) is utilized to increase identification accuracy. Experimental results gathered from the identification experiments conducted in the study for a practical DDR torque motor control system validate the effectiveness of the proposed method

    Multi-Fault Diagnosis Approach Based on Updated Interacting Multiple Model for Aviation Hydraulic Actuator

    The aviation hydraulic actuator (HA) is a key component of the flight control system in an aircraft. It is necessary to consider the occurrence of multiple faults under harsh conditions during a flight. This study designs a multi-fault diagnosis method based on the updated interacting multiple model (UIMM). The correspondence between the failure modes and the key physical parameters of HA is found by analyzing the fault mode and mechanism. The key physical parameters of HA can be estimated by employing a series of extended Kalman filters (EKF) related to the different modes of HA. The models in UIMM are updated once the fault is determined. UIMM can reduce the number of fault models and avoid combinatorial explosion in the case of multiple faults. Simulation results indicate that the multi-fault diagnosis method based on UIMM is effective for multi-fault diagnosis of electro-hydraulic servo actuation system

    Investigations on asymmetric transmittivity of optical devices and different diode-like behaviors

    Summary: This study theoretically proved that although reciprocal optical devices can show asymmetric transmittivity (AT) under controlled incident modes (i.e., conditional AT), they cannot guarantee AT with arbitrary incident light modes, whereas only nonreciprocal optical devices can possibly guarantee AT. Besides, the thermodynamics of both reciprocal and nonreciprocal optical devices were discussed to show that the second law of thermodynamics is valid anyway. Furthermore, the diode-like behaviors of optical and electronic devices were compared. Electrons are identical to electronic devices, so electronic devices could have asymmetric conductance regardless of electrons. In contrast, electromagnetic waves are different from optical devices as transmittivity of different modes can be different, so reciprocal optical devices showing conditional AT cannot guarantee AT when incident modes are arbitrary. The mathematical proof and characteristic comparisons between electronic and optical diodes, which are firstly presented here, should help clarifying the necessary nonreciprocity required for being optical diodes

    Remaining useful life prediction based on the Wiener process for an aviation axial piston pump

    An aviation hydraulic axial piston pump’s degradation from comprehensive wear is a typical gradual failure model. Accurate wear prediction is difficult as random and uncertain characteristics must be factored into the estimation. The internal wear status of the axial piston pump is characterized by the return oil flow based on fault mechanism analysis of the main frictional pairs in the pump. The performance degradation model is described by the Wiener process to predict the remaining useful life (RUL) of the pump. Maximum likelihood estimation (MLE) is performed by utilizing the expectation maximization (EM) algorithm to estimate the initial parameters of the Wiener process while recursive estimation is conducted utilizing the Kalman filter method to estimate the drift coefficient of the Wiener process. The RUL of the pump is then calculated according to the performance degradation model based on the Wiener process. Experimental results indicate that the return oil flow is a suitable characteristic for reflecting the internal wear status of the axial piston pump, and thus the Wiener process-based method may effectively predicate the RUL of the pump
